How to Choose the Right Board for a Kitchen

MFC, MDF, or moisture-resistant? A practical guide to picking the right substrate for kitchen cabinetry — without the jargon.

Choosing the right board for a kitchen cabinet might seem like a material decision. It's actually a client satisfaction decision.

Get it right and the cabinets perform for years. Get it wrong and a damp environment, a heavy pot, or a rough edge finish makes the problem yours to solve.

Here's a straightforward framework.


The three boards you'll use most

MFC (Melamine-Faced Chipboard) is the workhorse of the cabinetry world. A chipboard core with a melamine resin surface fused under heat and pressure. It's dimensionally stable, takes edge banding cleanly, cuts well, and comes in hundreds of finishes — from plain whites to convincing timber reproductions. For standard kitchen carcasses and door fronts, MFC is almost always the right call.

MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is denser, heavier, and smoother than chipboard. It's the material of choice for painted door fronts — it takes primer and paint without grain show-through, and holds a routed profile edge cleanly. For anything that needs a flawless painted finish, MDF wins over MFC every time.

Moisture-resistant board (look for the green-core chipboard) is not a premium upgrade — it's the correct material for wet areas. Standard MFC will swell at joints and behind sinks within 12–18 months. Moisture-resistant board won't. Use it in any kitchen area that could see water exposure, and in all bathroom vanities.

Thickness: 16mm vs 18mm

For standard kitchen carcasses, 18mm is the industry standard — it's the thickness most hinge and fitting hardware is designed around, and it gives enough material for screw-grip in carcass joints.

16mm works for back panels, internal shelves in lighter-duty wardrobes, and smaller boxes. Don't use it as carcasse side walls for kitchen units — the hardware tolerances get tight and it doesn't provide the long-term structural integrity clients expect.


Edge banding matters as much as the board

A correctly matched edge band — same colour, correctly applied — is what separates a professional result from an amateur one. Budget for PVC edging on all exposed edges. For premium work, ABS edging is more durable and gives a softer corner.

Heat the iron, trim cleanly, and sand lightly. The edge is where most failures happen.


The one question to ask before you quote

Where is the nearest water source?

If the answer is within 600mm of a carcasse — sink, dishwasher, basin, water point — specify moisture-resistant board. It costs a little more. It saves a call-back.
